De Verenigde Staten van Amerika zijn het oudste niet-kerkelijke land ter wereld. Toch is religie alom aanwezig in de levensinstelling en het geloof van de meeste Amerikanen. De diversiteit van de groeperingen heeft een hoogst concurrerend religieus stelsel doen ontstaan. Malise Ruthven trok dwars door Amerika, reizend in een gedeukte kampeerbus, op zoek naar godsdienstige manifestaties. Zijn ervaringen waren vaak bizar en soms zelfs beangstigend. De reis bracht hem van de donkere bossen van puriteins New England naar de neonazistische sekten in de Rocky Mountains, van mormonen en slangenhanteerders naar fundamentalistische gemeenschappen die de evolutieleer betwisten, van channellers in Californië naar de seksuele en financiële schandalen rond steenrijke televisiedominees. Dit schitterende reisboek en een uniek inzicht in de ziel van het moderne Amerika zijn de resultaten van die reis.

Malise Ruthven, freelance schrijver, woonachtig in Engeland (Londen), maakte met z'n camper een reis van een kleine 20.000 km door Amerika om kennis te nemen van de bonte wereld van de Amerikaanse sekten. Dit boek is zijn reisverslag. Interessant, maar niet van hoog wetenschappelijke waarde. Het is geschreven met een sterk vooroordeel, wat op vele bladzijden te merken is. Ruthven moet niet veel, om niet te zeggen niets, van de Amerikaanse religiositeit hebben. Voor een groot deel heeft hij daar m.i. gelijk in, maar wil men de sekten recht doen dan is het nodig om te proberen in de huid van de ander te kruipen en daar ontbreekt het in dit boek aan. Dat neemt niet weg dat het een interessant boek is geworden.

Ter sprake komen de Shakers, met hun extatische ervaringen. Verschillende opwekkingsbewegingen (Finney en Edwards). Het oordeel van de schrijver over Jonathan Edwards is wel heel erg hard: 'een prediker, die voor Christus vele zielen won door zijn toehoorders te terroriseren met zijn preken over hel en verdoemenis'.

Het spiritisme. Een sterk racistische Nazi-kerk, alleen voor blanken. ('Hier konden nazi's de kwaadaardigste vormen van antisemitisme verkondigen zonder dat de wet er iets aan deed'). De Love Family, met zijn autoritaire heerser die vele privileges ontvangt krachtens zijn 'bovenaardse spiritualiteit'. De Bhagwan beweging met z'n groepsseks en met aan het hoofd Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, die van zijn volgelingen bijna honderd splinternieuwe Rolls Royces ontving en vanwege huwelijkszwendel uit de Verenigde Staten werd uitgewezen. Het Fundamentalisme (Hal Lindsey). Het Baptisme ('Dominees die spreken op een vreesaanjagende, beschuldigende toon of in een nauwelijks hoorbare theatrale fluistering'). Natuurlijk komen ook de immens rijke televisie-dominees ter sprake, het christendom op z'n smalst: dominees met een inkomen van vele miljoenen dollars per jaar, in het bezit van een privévliegtuig, elkaar op alle mogelijke manieren beconcurrerend en gewikkeld in seksschandalen. Men geneert zich deze verhalen van evangeliepredikers te lezen, maar in Amerika doet men er niet zo moeilijk over. De schrijver doet een poging de veelkleurige bonte wereld van de Amerikaanse religiositeit te verklaren. Hij zegt: De sleutel tot deze religieuze wereld is de absolute vrijheid van godsdienst. Amerika zou voor miljoenen immigranten het nieuwe 'beloofde land' zijn, 'het Heilige Gemenebest' dat bijzonder tot de Amerikaanse verbeeldingskracht spreekt en een optimisme voortbracht dat onverschrokken en ergerlijk simplistisch was. Of daar alles mee gezegd is? De schrijver spreekt van Amerika van een goddelijke supermarkt (zo luidt ook de Engelse titel van het boek), waarvan alles te koop is: yoga, nazisme, bijbellezingen, 'heilig wiegen', popconcerten en rock voor Jezus. Inderdaad is het een bonte wereld, dikwijls goedkoop wat de boodschap betreft en peperduur als het gaat om de glimmer, de show en de luxe. En allerminst bijbels, ook al spreekt men van de boodschap van het evangelie. Dat te lezen is interessant maar laat ook een bittere smaak na, omdat veel gebeurt 'in de Naam van Jezus' en daardoor die Naam naar beneden wordt gehaald. [bron: https--www.digibron.nl]

British journalist Ruthven brings an outsider's perspective to the American religious scene. The author traveled across the country, visiting such places as the Mormons' Nauvoo, the Nazi Church of Idaho, Bakker's Heritage USA, Falwell's Liberty University, and Merton's Gethsemani Abbey. Though admittedly more interested in the exotic than the mainstream, Ruthven weaves accurate historical information with firsthand observations, interviews, and his own analysis. Interestingly, he sees religious pluralism as vital to American democracy. "In normal times the regional, social and ideological divisions that could tear the nation apart find an outlet in religion." Politics remains stable unless a religious issue like abolition, prohibition, or abortion invades the public arena. A readable book with some fresh insights.

Books need not be written for professionals in order to be valuable. For example, when written by a gifted writer, a travel diary can be a source of pleasure and instruction, for a visitor may see things that go unnoticed by those who inhabit a land. Thus I confess a fondness for the genre for which Alexis de Tocqueville set the standard. In the 1850s, the Latter-day Saints first became a focus for travel writers, and two of these writers, Jules Remy and Julius Brenchley, borrowed somewhat from Tocqueville. The most recent entry into this field is an English journalist, Malise Ruthven, author of The Divine Supermarket. Like Richard F. Burton a hundred and thirty years earlier, Ruthven has written at different times about both Islam and Mormonism.

Having been raised in England in "mainstream, liberal Protestantism", which he now disdains, and having come from a privileged background, Ruthven deals with religion in America in a charming, fashionably condescending manner. He writes as one mildly amused by the strange behavior he finds rampant among Americans. "I have," he explains, "deliberately selected subjects like Mormonism and fundamentalism, that seemed exotic and alien to my own way of thinking, to seek out differences rather than explore common ground" between American and European (or British) religiosity. Thus in The Divine Supermarket, he exploits the seemingly bizarre manifestations of religion in the United States, which he insists are unlike religion in Britain.

Malise Walter Maitland Knox Hore-Ruthven (born 14 May 1942) is an Anglo-Irish academic and writer.

Born in Dublin in 1942, he earned an MA in English Literature at Cambridge University, before working as a scriptwriter with the BBC Arabic and World Service, and a consultant on Middle Eastern affairs.

He earned his PhD in Social and Political Sciences from Cambridge University. Having pursued a career as a writer, journalist and teacher, he focuses his work on religion, fundamentalism, and especially Islamic affairs.

Ruthven contributed an afterword to the most recent edition of Albert Hourani's History of the Arab Peoples, bringing that work up to date following Hourani's death. Dr Ruthven is internationally recognised for his work on Muslim thought and theology, fundamentalism, Mormonism, the social impact of religion and migration and the nexus between contemporary politics and belief.

Malise Ruthven's book reviews have appeared in The Sunday Times, The Guardian, The Observer, The Times Literary Supplement, Prospect Magazine and The New York Review of Books (NYR). His blog for the NYR, Revolution by Latrine, won an award from the Overseas Press Club of America in April 2011.

He is a regular contributor to the NYR, where he has written articles and reviews on such topics as Al Qaeda, Islam in Europe, unanswered questions in the Lockerbie crash and the repression of gay people in Iran. He also contributes occasionally to the BBC. He used the term "Islamofascism" as early as 8 September 1990 in The Independent. In 2004, London's Prospect Magazine ranked Ruthven among the 100 top public intellectuals in the UK.

He has taught Islamic studies, cultural history and comparative religion at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, Birkbeck College, University of London, UC-San Diego, Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, USA) and Colorado College (Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA)

He has given numerous lectures as an expert on the Middle East. He has been described by Madeleine Bunting for The Guardian as "one of today's most perceptive observers and historians of religion".

Malise Ruthven is the younger son of Patrick Hore-Ruthven and Pamela Margaret Fletcher. His elder brother is Grey Ruthven, 2nd Earl of Gowrie. Alexander Hore-Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie, was his grandfather. He is the godson of the late Dame Freya Stark, whom his parents knew in Cairo in 1942; Ruthven published several collections of Stark's photographs.
