Description
Peter Parker lives in a luxurious midtown penthouse with his beautiful super–model wife, Mary Jane Watson. Living with them is Aunt May. Peter also lands the dream job of his life with the Tri Corp Research Foundation. And he has given up being Spider-Man. So even though the rest of the super–hero community wonders about Spider-Man’s absence, life is good.
Such are the circumstances of the reboot of one of Marvel’s flagship characters. The convoluted state of affairs that the Spider-Man continuity had become in 1998 compelled Marvel to simplify the series by making some drastic alterations, undoing a few missteps, and restarting the numbering. Since Spider-Man’s distinctive role in comic history has always been as the down–on–his–luck, isolated, everyman–type character, such complacency is in direct contrast to the approach that made Spider-Man popular. Already events in the first issue do not bode well for Parker’s continued tranquillity.
