    Complete set with fine bindings and 200 Art coloured platesAn attractive two large books. The first book contains the volume I, II, and III, and the second book contains the volume IV, and V. This work contains thorough descriptions of each wild flower, as well as their habitats and uses in medicine. Each series with 160 pages, however, the last series has an extra 8 pages of ‘Index of English Names’, ‘Index of Botanical Names’, Table of Botanical’, and ‘Orders and General Represented in the Work’.Each series has 40 colour plates printed on thick papers, more like finished paintings than prints. Several black and white in-text illustrations. Illustrated capital letter to each chapter head. The quality and charm of the plates together with a more than usually informative letterpress made the work an immediate success and it was several times reissued in various formats.Published by Cassell And Company, Limited, London, c1879. Publisher’s original half leather spines, with marbled boards. The spines has six compartments with bands decorated in gilt, gilt lettering within red labels to second compartments. Firm and well bound. External covers are clean and in nice shape, with some scuffing to the leather and light wear to corners, and to top and foot of the spines. Internally; in very good condition. No names or inscriptions. Inner hinges are very good, and pages are tightly held at the gutters. Pages are clean, with light foxing and spotting marks to some pages and page edges. The plates are in very good condition (Lovely Collectible Set) (Please see pictures).Frederick Edward Hulme "Frederick Edward Hulme (1841-1909), naturalist and artist, was born in Staffordshire England, the son of Frederick William Hulme, a landscape painter. In 1870 he was appointed art and drawing master at Marlborough College, which was around the time he published Familiar Wild Flowers, his best known work. Familiar Garden Flowers was published later in his career, and the plates reveal the same level of skill and beauty exhibited in his earlier works."
