John Gould: Birds of Australia, Volume 5 (1975 Deluxe facsimile)John Gould ( 1804-1881) was a British explorer and painter of the animal kingdom, especially birds had his interest. Born as a gardener’s son Young John came interested in the natural world around him at a very young age. He became a gifted taxidermist and as such became connected to the London Museum of the Zoological Society in Lindon.The collection of tropical birds in the museum’s collection formed the basic of his first ornithological works. Later on het travelled extensively around the world to collect, study and draw birds, often accompanied by his wife Elisabeth, who also made many etchings based on her husbands sketches.In 1875 , after extensive travelling the illusive “new” continent, Gould published his widely acclaimed Birds Of Australia. A massive 7-volume series on the vibrant and often newly discovered bird species of Australia.In its original form this work of course is priceless, but in 1975 Australian Lansdowne Press produced a splendid Facsimile in 2 qualities, standard and deluxe.The deluxe edition of this facsimile has a brown leather cover with guilt lettering and decoration in a size of no less than 54x38 cm. The here offered book is Vol 5 of the Deluxe edition.Volume 5 is one of the most appealing volumes of this series is Volume 5, showing the colourful parrots, pigeons and also some ground dwelling birds of Australia.The internal and external condition of the offered book is very good.
