S.) purchased the tankard with hinged lid from P.G. in Reuver, The Netherlands. The previous owner, P.G. of Reuver, stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s.According to the previous owner, the tankard had previously been in a private collection in The Netherlands since the 1990s.According to the previous owner, the tankard was found during dredging operations in the Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, before 1980. The precise location and date of discovery were not recorded. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history or circumstances of discovery was available from the previous owner. Background Information:This substantial pewter tankard is a characteristic drinking and serving vessel of the 17th century, with a cylindrical body, sturdy handle and fitted hinged lid. Such covered vessels were practical objects used for serving beer and other beverages in households, inns and communal settings, while their durable pewter construction made them suitable for repeated everyday use.Inside the lid is a mark consisting of a shield surmounted by three crowns, together with the letters “CVL”. The three crowns are a long-established element of the heraldry of Cologne (Köln), connected with the city's association with the relics of the Three Magi. The mark therefore supports an attribution to Cologne. The letters “CVL” appear within the mark and may relate to the pewterer or workshop; without a securely documented comparison to a known master mark, however, the individual maker should not be identified with certainty.Cologne was an important centre of pewter production in the Rhineland. Its pewterers worked within an organised craft tradition in which alloy quality, workshop practice and marking were regulated. Cologne-made pewter circulated beyond the city itself, and workshops supplied customers throughout the Rhine region. The Rhine was one of north-westernope's principal commercial arteries, connecting Cologne with the Lower Rhine and the trading centres of the Dutch Republic. The stated Rotterdam provenance is therefore historically plausible in a broader commercial context, although the precise route by which this particular tankard reached the Netherlands cannot be established. Rotterdam was already an important port and trading city during the 17th century, with access to the extensive Rhine–Meuse river network linking the Dutch maritime economy with the German Rhineland. Goods and personal possessions could consequently move between Cologne and the Netherlands by established river and commercial routes.Dating to approximately 1650–1700, the tankard belongs to a period in which Cologne remained an important urban and craft centre on the Rhine while Rotterdam was developing rapidly as an international trading port. Combining a functional 17th-century drinking vessel with a Cologne-associated mark and an old stated Dutch provenance, the piece provides a tangible connection to the material culture and extensive commercial networks of the Rhine and Low Countries during the early modern period."
