The obverse bears the legend IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG and depicts a laureate and draped bust of the young emperor facing right. The type is recorded as RIC IV 14.The reverse bears the legend P M TR P II COS P P and depicts Salus seated left on a throne. She holds a patera from which she feeds a serpent coiled around an altar, while her left arm rests on the side of the throne. Salus personified health, safety and well-being, and her appearance on imperial coinage expressed wishes for the welfare of the emperor and, by extension, the stability of the Roman state.Silver denarii were an important part of Roman monetary circulation and were produced under central imperial authority according to established minting traditions. Coins combined their practical economic function with carefully selected portraits, inscriptions and religious imagery, allowing imperial messages to circulate throughout the Roman world.The coin belongs to the Severan period of the early 3rd century A.D., shortly before the political and military instability associated with the Crisis of the Third Century. As a silver coin originally handled in everyday transactions, it forms a direct and tangible connection to the economic, religious and political life of the Roman Empire.
