Item Description: Miyake Yoji (1950–2012)This exquisite flat-sided stoneware vessel (henko) is a fine example of Mashiko ware crafted by Miyake Yoji, a celebrated member of the Japan Kogei Association and a distinguished figure in the tradition of contemporary Mashiko ceramics. The piece features the artist's signature nukieh ginzai (resist-painted silver glaze) technique, in which the motif is reserved against a rich, deeply toned ground and accented with shimmering silver metallic glaze. The subject — hato mugi (Job's tears / Coix lacryma-jobi), a graceful wild grass bearing plump, pearl-like seeds — is rendered with refined brushwork and expressive naturalism, evoking the unhurried beauty of the Japanese countryside. The angular, hand-built square-bottle form (kakubin) reflects the grounded, earthy aesthetic for which Mashiko ware is renowned. In 1977, Miyake established his own studio in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, where he devoted himself to developing a highly personal ceramic vocabulary rooted in the mingei (folk craft) tradition championed by Hamada Shoji. He became a member of the Japan Kogei Association and went on to be selected for numerous prestigious exhibitions, including the Japan Traditional Kogei Exhibition (Nihon Dent Kgei-ten) and the Japan Ceramics Exhibition (Nihon Tgei-ten). His signature nukieh (resist-painting) technique, combined with shimmering silver and gold metallic glazes and naturalistic motifs — pumpkins, grapes, cherry blossoms, and wild grasses — rendered on angular, hand-built forms, earned him wide recognition as one of the most distinctive voices in modern Mashiko ceramics.
