Item Description IMAI Masayuki1930-2023This exceptional chawan (tea bowl) was crafted by IMAI Masayuki, one of the most celebrated ceramists of modern Japan and recipient of the prestigious Order of Culture (Bunka-kunsho). The piece features the dramatic shinsha (copper-red) glaze technique, in which a bold band of deep crimson red wraps around the mid-section of the bowl, bleeding organically into the pale celadon ground above and below — a chromatic tension born entirely of fire and chance. The interior reveals a luminous celadon surface with fine craquelure, drawing the eye to a mysterious pool of cerulean blue at the center of the well — a rare and prized kiln phenomenon where copper oxide transforms unpredictably in the reduction atmosphere. Near the foot ring, additional turquoise-blue passages appear, adding further depth to the glaze landscape. The foot ring (kodai) is deliberately faceted into an angular, sculptural form that departs from convention — a hallmark of Imai's confident artistic sensibility. The artist's impressed seal is clearly visible on the side of the foot. The piece comes with its original signed wooden box (tomobako) inscribed " / ".A work of quiet power that reveals new color and depth with each viewing — a true collector's piece from a master of 20th-century Japanese ceramics.SizeHeight: 8 cmWidth: 13.7 cmDepth: 13.2 cmWeight324 gConditionThe bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or significant flaws; the original wooden box (tomobako) has a small worm-hole-like blemish on one corner of the lid.Artist Profile IMAI Masayuki (1930–2023) was one of the preeminent figures of modern Japanese ceramics, born in Osaka and raised in Takehara, Hiroshima. He trained in Bizen-ware before moving to Kyoto in 1952, where he studied under master potter Katsuo Seiryudo and subsequently under Kusube Yaichi. He became a founding member of the Seitkai ceramic group in 1953, the same year he achieved his first acceptance into the prestigious Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), where he would go on to win the Special Prize and Hokuto Award twice. He served as a Nitten juror, board member, and ultimately as Honorary Advisor.Over his seven-decade career, Imai pioneered the technique of koke-deisei (moss-clay painting) and became internationally renowned for his mastery of inlay (zgan) decoration featuring fish, flowers, and the natural motifs of the Seto Inland Sea. He exhibited at the International Ceramics Biennale and was a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC). His many honors include the Japan Art Academy Prize (1998), the Order of Culture (Bunka-kunsho, 2018) — Japan's highest artistic decoration — and posthumous elevation to the Third Court Rank. He passed away on March 6, 2023, at the age of 92.NOTICE:The lot will be carefully packaged and sent by Japan Post, DHL or FedEx depend on the situation. It takes about 3 weeks to receive normally.Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.Sometimes Customes or delivery company in your country contact you for Customs clearance via phone or email.
