Titanium is een zilver overgangsmetaal dat slijtvast en corrosiebestendig is. Dominee William Gregor ontdekte titanium in 1791 en in 1910 was Matthew Hunter in staat om de eerste pure metalen vorm van het element te produceren met behulp van het Hunter-proces, de eerste industriële procedure die niet-verontreinigd metallisch titanium kon produceren. Titanium is momenteel het zevende meest voorkomende metaal op aarde en het negende meest voorkomende element in de aardkorst.
Titanium is a silver transition metal that is durable to abrasion and resistant to corrosion. Alloys of titanium are common in the manufacture of spacecrafts, jet engines, military equipment, medical devices, automobiles, and other industrial mechanisms. While its durability is unquestioned when combined with other metals, unalloyed titanium is equally as strong, matching the strength of many types of steel.
Reverend William Gregor discovered titanium in 1791, and by 1910, Matthew Hunter was able to produce the first pure metallic form of the element using the Hunter process, which was the first industrial procedure that could produce uncontaminated metallic titanium. Titanium is currently the seventh-most abundant metal on earth, and the ninth-most abundant element in the Earth’s crust.
