FOREWORD Those of us who are giving birth to the new field of Somatics have a lot to be thankful for in Jack Painter's work. He has done the incredible labor of producing a textbook of our field. The beauty of this book is multifaceted. It is a concise and crystalline description of the method of deep tissue bodywork. The descriptions of technique read like a manual. That alone is a major accomplishment. But Jack Painter has done more than document method. He has created a natural synthesis of the theory and philosophy of body- oriented work with descriptions of the work. In doing this he reveals the nuts and bolts of how and why the bodywork is practiced by the bodyworker who is both artist and therapist. I think this book is a major contribution to Western Psychology, which is just beginning to realize that Somatic teachers have been demonstrating for years: in therapy and education, we must learn from the wisdom of the body. Jack Painter is a pioneer in the development of bodywork, and this book is a wonderful map.
