Description

This book was written in 1998 and first published in 1999, before the dotcom boom and before ebXML. The book contains descriptions of the concepts of eCommerce, the business processes and the underlying technology. The book clearly describes the strengths and weaknesses of "traditional" EDI and those of the Internet as a medium for eCommerce. It positions XML/EDI is a solution for marrying the strengths of traditional EDI with the strengths of the Internet. It describes how UN-XML would take this a stage further. UN-XML combines the experience, stability and international robustness of the EDIFACT standard with the XML/EDI concept. This leverages investments made in "traditional" EDI and enables the rapid adoption of EDI across the spectrum of all companies and industries, while supporting international trade in the global environment. UN-XML was the founding concept for what was later called ebXML, the UN/CEFACT - OASIS standard for eCommerce over the Internet.
