This photo-packed volume covers the history of small fire- arms, pistols, pepperboxes, metal cartridge revolvers, muskets and nifies, derringers, percussion revolvers, accessories and oddities, and museum collections. Mr. Bowman traveled ex tensively to gather the material presented here and took many photographs which are published for the first time in this hook Lucian Cary, the famous writer and authority on fire arms and gun lore, edited the volume, and the nation's oct standing museums and individual collectors cooperated closely, offering exclusive rights to rare photographs of their major acquisitions. Here, in one concise volume, is the story of firearms and firearms patents between the years 1836 and 1880. Included are unique photographs and patent drawings of the models presently kept at the famous Sinithsonian Institution in Wash- ington, DC. The book is organized into five chapters: "The Background of Patent Legislation," which deals with the most colorful inventors, some successful and others failures, and their often strange weapons, "Percussion And After," which explains and traces the break-through that led to the modern firearm, "The Breech," which sells of the search for a new method of loading, "The Revolving Cylinder," which explains the evolution of the rapid-fite handgun; "Toward The Ulti mate Gun, which discusses the past and future of the guns and gun equipment currently in use.
