New Avengers Volume 4: The Collective [HC]

Six months (in comic-book time) have passed since the traumatic events of the controversial “Avengers Disassembled” saga. Now, with the remaining Avengers disbanded, The Fantastic Four out of the country, and The X-Men “preoccupied,” a mysterious figure hires Electro to perform a dastardly deed that will most likely be a catalyst for Captain America (or someone) to form a new team of heroes in a subsequent issue.

“Breakout! Part One” breaks no new ground (How many times have we seen a massive jailbreak in super–hero comics?), and the issue suffers from Marvel’s modern tendency to draw certain scenes out two or three pages, when they deserve a mere two or three panels. However, the dialogue is realistic (What else would one expect from Brian Michael Bendis?), and the characters look powerfully iconic. Electro, one of Marvel’s coolest villains, is especially electrifying.
