The territory was economically prosperous — Flanders and Brabant in particular were among the most densely urbanised and commercially active regions in Europe — but proved notoriously difficult to govern from afar. The region's resistance to centralising reform would erupt in the Brabant Revolution of 1789, a short-lived independence movement that briefly overthrew Austrian authority and foreshadowed the more permanent political changes brought by the French Revolutionary invasion of 1795. Johann Georg Schreiber (1676–1750) was a distinguished Leipzig engraver and cartographer whose "Atlas Selectus" was one of the most compact and widely used German-language atlases of the mid-18th century, prized for its precise lettering, clear provincial detail, and the characteristic decorative vignettes that adorn its title cartouches.
