Duane Michals (°1932) is an American self-taught photographer, known for his innovative use of photo-sequences, and his handwritten text near his photographs, giving information that the image itself could not convey. Michals cites Balthus, William Blake, Lewis Carroll, Thomas Eakins, René Magritte, and Walt Whitman as influences on his art. In turn, he has influenced photographers such as David Levinthal and Francesca Woodman.

Bevat een reeks zelfportretten, o.m. met André Kertesz (“in de stijl van David Hockney”), plus portretten van o.a. Andy Warhol, Joe Dallesandro, René Margritte en Marcel Duchamp. Daarnaast beroemde sequenties als ‘Death becomes the old lady’ en ‘The old man kills the minotaur’.
