Roger Somville

Roger Somville was a Belgian artist born in 1923 in Schaerbeek/Brussels and died in Tervuren in 2014. He was a painter, graphic artist (lithography) and designer of carpets.
Training at the Academy led by G. G. The Vlamynck (1940-1942) and at the Bois de la Cambre in Brussels, led by CH. CH. Counhaye (1942-1944). From 1945 onwards, from 1945, cardboards for tapestries of such a convincing realism that he had come across in this area in this area. In 1946 co-founder of the Centre de Rénovation de la Tapisserie de Tournai, together with E. Dubrunfaut and L. - Deltour. - Deltour. His work is realistic, with an expressionist note, and behind every creation there is always an idea that is worked out on large canvases or wall panels. Initially, his compositions often testified from social and political engagement, later on more poetic inspired works also emerged. Often worked in sequences or covered themes.
Like no other, he was able to give shape to his vibrant urge to live in his works. From the press: "The paintings of Somville undergo a drive, a dynamism. The color, shapes and brush strokes are the basis of the movement that crosses the canvas. The human figure remains his weapon to win the struggle of realism. Female figures uncover their bodies without shame. Their thick breasts and voluptuous shapes strengthen their presence on the canvas. The almost identical faces bestow on them the status of “the” woman, as Somville sees them, feels and caresses. He makes them out of color and she becomes life that vibrates the whole composition."
He was a member of the Jeune Peinture Belge. Co-founder of the Force Murales Groups (1947), Céramique de Dour (1951), Art et Réalité (1954), Arts d’Europe (1963), Mouvement Réalist Belge (1968) and Artes Bruxellae (1975); Mural paintings, including in the Hankar metro station in Brussels (1974-1976), university campus at Louvain-La-Neuve (1987). Founded a ceramics studio in Dour and was a monumental art teacher (1958-1984) at the Academy in Bosvoorde. Work in the museums in Brussels, Ixelles, Liege, Charleroi, La Louviere.
