The first Nishikigoi and Ponds was published in 1980 in commemoration of the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the ZNA. The aim was to leave for posterity a record of the world of Nishikigoi as it was at the time. Applications were invited from those wishing to be included in the publication, and it is no exaggeration to say that all the top names in the world of Nishikigoi at the time (including those from overseas) were included. Together with a photograph of the owner, each entry also featured the person's favourite koi, and this allows us now to see the changes that have taken place in our ideas of excellence in koi. That is to say, at that time koi with relatively small heads and well)shaped bodies were preferred, while later the preference was for jumbo types. The taste in patterning changed, too: standard pattern forms were most popular then, but later people came to say a little irregularity in the patterning was permissible if the koi had a powerful appeal to it.

While the Kohaku and Taisho Sanshoku were also affected, it has been a time in which the Showa Sanshoku has undergone the greatest degree of modernisation. And these changes can be followed clearly in the pages of the book.
The first Nishikigoi and Ponds also gives detailed descriptions of the structure of the ponds featured. That is, we can know in full how large the ponds were then, and what ideas people had regarding filtration systems. This was of course the first time the ZNA had planned anything like this kind of publicaion, and at the time no one had any idea that subsequent editions would be issued at regular intervals, but in 1985 Nishikigoi and Ponds No. 2 was published to commemorate our twentieth anniversary, followed by Nishikigoi and Ponds No. 3 in 1990 to commemorate our twenty-fifth anniversary, and now Nishikigoi and Ponds No. 4 to commemorate our thitrtieth anniversary.

In this way, issuing Nishhikigoi and Ponds every five years means that we have left for posterity very significant data giving a clear picture of the history of the development of the world of Nishikigoi. For one thing, there is a gradually growing number of new faces; whiel it is saddening not to see once-familiar faces, it is certainly heartening to see the powerful line-up of new faces that are taking their place.
There is a gradual increase in entries from overseas in particular, the new edition featuring 64 overseas enthusiast from 11 countries.
In recent years the ZNA has spread to South Africa, Germany, Belgium, Holland and Norway, and in the next edition I am sure even more countries will be included.
Nishikigoi too are changing, away from the jumbo style to a more natural body shape, superb specimens with their good points well brought out.
Ponds are also larger, with better performance.
The publication of Nishikigoi and Ponds No. 4 is a truly meaningful event, and I recommend you keep this enjoyable book beside you as a keepsake.
