Rivesaltes Vin Doux Naturel 1979 — D. de Besombes-SinglaThe Singla family has worked these vines since the 1700s, on the rolled-pebble terraces of the Rivesaltais between the white limestone of Opoul and the saline soils bordering the étang — the ground on which Grenache gives its fullest measure. The house has long been known for the old vintages kept back in its Réserve Familiale, the 1945, 1949, 1951, 1969 and 1976 among them, and a 1979 sits squarely in that lineage. Estate-bottled at the property; the label carries a named cuvée seal D. De Besombes Cingla.A Vin Doux Naturel is fortified during fermentation, and the resulting wine is effectively immune to the passage of time: four decades in bottle bring the rancio character the Roussillon prizes — candied fruit, hazelnut, cinnamon, dried orange peel, a long saline finish. Bottles of this age and origin are routinely found in excellent drinking condition. Serve lightly chilled, with a walnut cake, an aged Comté, or on its own.Condition — Label complete and legible, with light staining and handling marks consistent with cellar age. Capsule intact. Level: 2 or 3cms above neck.Provenance & storage — bottle held in a single private collection, stored in a wine cellar, no light, constant température. Never reconditioned or relabelled. Sold as they stand, with the condition described above; bidders are invited to study the photographs closely.Shipped double-boxed in a purpose-made two-bottle shipper, fully insured.
