Von der Vogelwaide is a distinctive wine project led by Daniel Vogelwaid and Michael Donabaum, two passionate winemakers from the Wachau region of Austria. In 2019, the duo chose to forge their own path, explicitly moving away from the traditional "Weingut" (winery) designation. They pursue innovative methods and place a strong emphasis on sustainability and biodynamic production. Their international experience in renowned wine regions and their diverse backgrounds—including interior design—give them a unique perspective on both viticulture and creativity. Daniel studied viticulture and oenology in Geisenheim, Bordeaux, and Vienna. He worked at prestigious estates such as Domaine de l’Horizon, Château Palmer, and Comtes Lafon in France, as well as Fryer’s Cove in South Africa. Michael, on the other hand, grew up in the family business and honed his skills at renowned wineries like Franz Hirtzberger and Tokara in South Africa. He is also passionate about interior design, which brings an additional creative dimension to his work as a winemaker. “We complement each other well,” confirms Michael. “We both enjoy being in the vineyard. Daniel is the cellar master, while I’m mainly into everything that follows—sales, design, and so on.”The search for vineyards began in 2019 with a striking campaign in the Wachau region, calling for hard-to-access or abandoned vineyards. Within a week, they found two plots that were almost unrecognizable due to overgrowth. With dedication and passion, they set about cultivating these sites and breathing new life into them. The first vineyard, located in the *Ried Schön* in Spitzer Graben, was—in their own words—“like a sleeping Sleeping Beauty.” A hidden gem. With the support of—among others—Grandma Donabaum, the young men were able to plant their first vines within a few months. They now manage a full 3 hectares of organic land, 2.3 hectares of which are currently in production.This alternative approach is characteristic of their style: free-spirited, unconventional, and innovation-driven. What makes this project so special is not only the experience and knowledge they bring to the table but also their philosophy of inclusivity, creativity, and respect for nature. Their wines reflect a deep connection to the unique terroirs of the Wachau, moving away from conventional methods to create something entirely their own.
