Aretha Louise Franklin was an American gospel, soul, and R&B singer, pianist, and civil rights activist revered as the “Queen of Soul.” Rising from singing in her father’s Detroit church to chart-topping success with hits like “Respect,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and “Chain of Fools,” she sold over 75 million records, won 18 Grammys, and in 1987 became the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
