The Radiomir was introduced in the mid 2000’s and was the second major watch series to be added to the Panerai collection.

What would later become the Radiomir had been in development as early as 1936 when it was used extensively by the Italian Navy. Their divers found the large dial and luminous numerals painted with Panerai’s proprietary Radiomir substance extremely useful in underwater environments.

Unfortunately, Radiomir was made primarily from radium, a compound later discovered to be highly radioactive and therefore dangerous to have in close proximity to humans, even in the relatively small quantities needed to paint a watch dial. Panerai continued to use the substance in the watch until this discovery, changing to Luminor, their tritium-based paint that was much safer to use. With that change came the namesake watch design and the Radiomir was consigned to the history books until its 21st century revival.

Thankfully, today’s Radiomir watches are no longer radioactive, but they still retain the super legible dial and large cushion case that made it so popular with the Italian Navy all those years ago.
