The Panerai Luminor was released commercially in 1993, having been previously only available to serving military members.

Based on early Panerai watches used by the Italian Navy (Regia Marina), the Luminor is best known for its unique D-shaped crown guard that requires a lever to be lifted up in order to wind and set the watch. The Luminor was initially slow to sell, owing to Panerai being a relatively unknown brand at the time, but that all changed when it caught the attention of actor Sylvester Stallone.

He noticed a Luminor in the window of an Italian jeweller and liked it so much, he requested a special version that could be worn for the underwater scenes in his film Daylight. Panerai produced the Luminor Submersible Slytech as both a prototype, which was worn in the film, as well as a publicly available limited run. Stallone loved it so much that he gifted examples to friends, including fellow action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger who wore one in his film Eraser.

The endorsement of two of Hollywood’s biggest stars was instrumental in promoting the Luminor and firmly put Panerai on the map in the watch world. Today the Luminor series has expanded to include several complications including a GMT, flyback chronograph and even a tourbillon model. Collectors can also choose from steel, gold and ceramic case materials and three different sizes.
