Rolex Datejust 16234 'black diamond dial'

After the introduction of the 160XX reference series in 1977, Rolex launched the 162XX reference series 11 years later in 1988, which continued until around 2006. The 3035 caliber was replaced by the 3135 caliber, further refining its performance. This caliber remained the longest-used movement by Rolex. Additionally, Rolex discontinued the use of plexiglass and equipped the 162XX Datejust series with scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. In the late 1990s, Rolex ceased using tritium and started using superluminova on all dials from the year 2000.

Over the years, numerous dial variations have emerged for the Datejust. However, the stainless steel models of the 16234 series offered a relatively conventional selection of dial colors, such as the traditional white, silver, rich blue, and as seen on this Datejust, the black dial. But as they say, simplicity is timeless beauty!

This Rolex Datejust is from the year 1994. With its sharp case, sharp 18K white gold bezel, and jubilee bracelet that remains tight for its age, this watch is in beautiful condition. The black dial surrounded with diamonds not only makes this Datejust suitable for any occasion in daily life but also adds extra charm. It's a perfect mix of vintage and modern, if you ask us! The watch underwent a complete service by Rolex in March 2022, preserving its originality. This neo-vintage Datejust comes with its outer box, inner box, hangtags, papers, and Rolex service card.

Datejust

In the year 1945, the first Datejust was introduced to commemorate Rolex's 40th anniversary under the reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a waterproof case that also displayed the date and automatically changed it at midnight. The Datejust was equipped with the fluted bezel and the renowned Jubilee bracelet, which was specially designed for the Datejust. The date was indicated at the 3 o'clock position. Ten years later, in 1955, the date window was fitted with a Cyclops lens, magnifying the date up to 2.5 times.

Most iconic Rolex models were produced as tool watches. However, the Datejust had no specific purpose. This model was meant to be a classic, reliable, and versatile watch suitable for any occasion in daily life.

Released in 1945, the Datejust is Rolex’s longest standing collection and was created to commemorate the company's 40th anniversary. Unlike other Rolex watches, the Datejust was not designed for a specific activity or environment and simply exists as a smart, reliable timepiece.

Pioneering for its time, the Datejust was the first self-winding watch to feature a date display window and also the first Rolex watch to use the Jubilee bracelet design. Combined with the tried and true Oyster case, the Datejust is both understated and elegant and looks at home in both casual and formal settings. The watch is also available in a variety of dial designs, case sizes and metals making it the most versatile series in the Rolex collection.

Having been a permanent fixture in the Rolex collection for over 75 years, the Datejust is ingrained in the public consciousness and for many, represents exactly what Rolex is about. The watch has had its fair share of renowned wearers over the years including Dwight D Eisenhower and Martin Luther King Jr. and has appeared countless times in cinema and TV.

The simplicity of the Datejust is one of its defining characteristics and a big reason why it’s proved so popular over the years. Winding and setting the watch is incredibly easy to do: simply unscrew the crown from the case and turn clockwise to wind the movement. Pulling the crown out one click and turning will set the date and a second click to set the time. Once all three have been done, press the crown in, screw back into the case and put the watch on your wrist and let the self winding movement keep the power topped up whilst you wear it.
