The TAG Heuer Autavia was released in 1962 and was the first watch created under the leadership of CEO Jack Heuer.

The name comes from a contraction of the words AUTomobile and AVIAtion, which was the name of the dashboard timers produced by Heuer in the 1930’s that inspired the watch. Vintage Autavia references were available in several variants - two or three register chronographs and differing bezel scales that could be used to measure speed or a second time-zone.

The Autavia ceased production in 1986 during Heuer’s difficulties during the quartz crisis and subsequent sale to TAG. Other than a handful of re-issue models, including a limited 2017 55th anniversary edition, the Autavia remained dormant until 2019 when the newly named Autavia Isograph line was launched.

Somewhat controversially, TAG decided to remove the chronograph function of the original Autavia, opting for a simplified three-hand design with rotating bezel. The decision was likely to keep the lines between the Autavia and Carrera series clear, but it was one that split fans and collectors alike. Still, the Autavia Isograph is a great watch in its own right and having the Autavia back as a permanent fixture in the TAG collection can only be a good thing.
