The Cartier Santos was introduced in 1911 and is considered to be the first men’s wristwatch. It was designed by Louis Cartier and named in honour of aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, after he wore early prototypes of the watch during his flights.

The square case design was unique for the time and the exposed screws around the bezel held the glass in place and were intended to resemble the legs of the Eiffel Tower. Combined with a highly legible dial, it enabled early pilots to quickly read the time in the busy, open-air cockpits of early aeroplanes.

Over the decades, Cartier changed design and name several times, adding sub-series to the Santos collection as a whole. The Santos de Cartier in 1978 came with an integrated steel bracelet and was the brand’s addition to the luxury sports trend started by Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet.

The Santos Galbee was introduced in 1987 in response to the quartz crisis, opting for battery power with a more rounded case shape. The mid-2000’s saw Cartier dip their toe into the oversized watch trend with the Santos 100; a beefed up, modernised watch with plenty of wrist presence. Finally Cartier went full-circle in 2018, releasing a watch that went back to the original design whilst taking aspects from previous iterations over the last century and naming it simply, Santos.
