The 34mm Rolex Oysterdate is a true classic and was in the Rolex catalogue for decades. Used very often as a watch for special presentation dials, this example has an interesting additional military element in that it bears the logo of the Royal Saudi Armed Forces on the dial. These watches were given as gifts to officials and other important people as was the custom in the Middle East.

The watch remains in great condition, with a strong case. The silver dial has gold colour fittings and matching hands and the Saudi logo in the lower half where normally there would be the PRECISION text. The bracelet is a solid link Oyster bracelet reference 78350, with a clasp stamped ‘L 10’ and ref 557 endlinks, that remains in excellent condition. The watch has been fully serviced by our watchmaker.

We love these special presentation watches and have written about them here. Please get in touch to discuss this watch and other that we can offer you.

Making its debut in 1953, the Oysterdate was intended as an entry-level watch for the Rolex brand. Sharing many similarities with both the Datejust and Oyster Perpetual Date, the Oysterdates key differentiator is in its movement.

Whereas Datejust and OP Date both had automatic movements, the Oysterdate was powered by a manually wound 1215 calibre movement. This was a clever move by Rolex as the movement significantly reduced the price of the watch but changed little to the overall design. Users could get a great looking Rolex watch at a more affordable price with only the slight inconvenience of needing to regularly wind the watch.

The watch was based on the ever-popular Oyster design, with a 34mm stainless steel case and a choice of black or white dials. Later references added more dial colour options as well as an improved, but still manually-wound movement, the calibre 1225.

The Oysterdate remained part of the Rolex collection for over 30 years until it was eventually discontinued in 1989, leaving the Cellini and soon-to-be-updated Daytona as the only manually-would watches made by the brand. Today the Oysterdate has a cult following and is a great entry point for those looking to start collecting vintage Rolex.
