The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was released in 1972 and caused controversy at the Basel Watch Fair. Created by Gerald Genta who reportedly sketched the initial design overnight, the Royal Oak caused waves in the industry with its unconventional design and high price tag for a steel watch.

The now-iconic octagonal bezel, exposed screws and integrated bracelet certainly made the Royal Oak an attention-grabber, but as with anything ahead of its time, it took a few years for the watch to become popular among collectors.
