Rolex Datejust 1600 'Grey / Anthracite Dial'

The Datejust 16XX series was produced between the 1960s and 1970s. We all know the famous reference 1601 with white gold fluted bezel and the 1603 with the steel engine-turned bezel. But of course we can't forget the Datejust 1600 which fits perfectly into the line-up either.

The beautiful vintage Datejust 1600 we have here in front of us is generally a bit simpler, but they often say: less is more! The watch features a steel smooth bezel which gives it a slightly dressier and more subdued look.

But then we come to a point that makes us very happy again. The Datejust 16XX series was often equipped with a silver pie-pan dial. But...take a look at this unique and, in our opinion, quite rare dial which we don't often see coming by on the vintage Datejust 1600 series. It can be described as light grey, dark grey, anthracite or sometimes even a little olive green when viewed from different angles. A true eye-catcher! But if it can't get any prettier, the dial features a white ''sheriff'' print and the tritium which is still fully intact shows a beautiful cream discolouration together with the hands. This vintage Datejust 1600 also has its original open-6 and open-9 date wheel.

The case of this beautiful vintage Rolex 1600 is thick and the lugs are still nice and sharp. The original folded Jubilee bracelet, together with the thick Rolex crown on the clasp, is still in great condition. This amazing Rolex Datejust 1600 with grey anthracite dial comes with 1 year mechanical warranty.

Datejust

In the year 1945 the first Datejust was introduced in honour of the 40-year existence of Rolex, under the reference 4467. This was the first self-winding watch with a watertight case that also indicated the date. It even automatically transitioned the date after midnight. The Datejust was equipped with a serrated bezel and the famous Jubilee bracelet, especially designed for the Datejust. The date was placed on the 3-hour mark. Ten years later, in 1955, the date-window was given a "cyclops lens", which magnifies the date up to two and a half times.

Rolex's most iconic models were produced to function as "tool watches". The Datejust, however, did not have a specific purpose. This model was supposed to be a classic, reliable, everyday watch, suitable for any occasion in day-to-day life.

Released in 1945, the Datejust is Rolex’s longest standing collection and was created to commemorate the company's 40th anniversary. Unlike other Rolex watches, the Datejust was not designed for a specific activity or environment and simply exists as a smart, reliable timepiece.

Pioneering for its time, the Datejust was the first self-winding watch to feature a date display window and also the first Rolex watch to use the Jubilee bracelet design. Combined with the tried and true Oyster case, the Datejust is both understated and elegant and looks at home in both casual and formal settings. The watch is also available in a variety of dial designs, case sizes and metals making it the most versatile series in the Rolex collection.

Having been a permanent fixture in the Rolex collection for over 75 years, the Datejust is ingrained in the public consciousness and for many, represents exactly what Rolex is about. The watch has had its fair share of renowned wearers over the years including Dwight D Eisenhower and Martin Luther King Jr. and has appeared countless times in cinema and TV.

The simplicity of the Datejust is one of its defining characteristics and a big reason why it’s proved so popular over the years. Winding and setting the watch is incredibly easy to do: simply unscrew the crown from the case and turn clockwise to wind the movement. Pulling the crown out one click and turning will set the date and a second click to set the time. Once all three have been done, press the crown in, screw back into the case and put the watch on your wrist and let the self winding movement keep the power topped up whilst you wear it.
