Description
This fountain pen features the traditional Japanese technique of Kosyu Inden.
Koshu Inden is a traditional Japanese craft with a history spanning over 400 years, originating in Koshu (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture).
It played a significant role in the attire and equipment of the samurai class, particularly during the Warring States period (late 15th to late 16th centuries). The unique properties of deerskin and the decorative yet durable lacquer made it a valuable material for warriors.
Symbolism and Status: The intricate patterns and high quality of Koshu Inden signified the wearer's status and taste. Certain motifs might have even carried symbolic meanings associated with bravery, good fortune, or clan affiliation.
Craftsmanship and Materials:
Deerskin: Prized for its softness, durability, and lightweight nature. It's said to feel very comfortable against the skin and becomes more supple with use.
Lacquer (Urushi): A natural varnish applied to the deerskin in intricate patterns. The lacquer not only decorates but also enhances the leather's durability and gives it a unique luster that deepens over time.
Techniques: Traditional techniques like fusube (smoke patterning), urushi zuke (lacquer application), and sarasa (colorful stenciled printing) have been passed down through generations.
Handcrafted: Koshu Inden products are typically handmade by skilled artisans, requiring meticulous work and precision
Characteristics:
Soft and supple: The deerskin provides a luxurious feel.
Durable: The combination of deerskin and lacquer creates long-lasting products.
Ages beautifully: Both the deerskin and the lacquer develop a richer character over time.
